The Value of an Engagement Session: 5 Reasons they’re Important
Believe it or not, an engagement session is a crucial part of the wedding photography process. Many couples initially underestimate the importance of these sessions, but they play a huge role in us working well together! I’ve started including engagement sessions in each and every package I offer because I feel so strongly about them. Here are five reasons why engagement sessions are so so important.
1- An engagement session gets you comfortable in front of the camera.
Many people are camera-shy and feel awkward when they know they are being photographed. Almost every consult call includes some variation on how the couple feels nervous in front of the camera. But don’t worry, I got you! An engagement session allows you to get to know me, your photographer, and feel comfortable in my presence. I promise I’m not scary, in fact I am happy to make a goof of myself to get the photo! When your wedding day arrives, you will feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera.

Engagement sessions provide a chance to showcase your personality as a couple. You can choose the location and style of your session to reflect your unique tastes and interests. The photos from your engagement session will capture the essence of your relationship and show off your personalities. I’ve had sessions that run the gamut from super stylized with props and décor, to quick little shots in a local park. This is what is so great about your session, it’s tailored to you! Engagement sessions are a great way to build trust with your photographer. By working with your photographer beforehand, you will have a better understanding of their style and approach. You will also have a chance to provide feedback and make any necessary adjustments. People don’t realize how important this is. If there’s a pose you don’t like, or don’t feel comfortable in, tell me! I want to know! This way, on your wedding day, you can trust that I will capture the photos you want.
5 – Your engagement session let’s your prepare for your wedding day
An engagement session is like a dress rehearsal for your wedding day; kinda. At least the portrait part of the day! You can practice different poses and learn what works best for you as a couple. This way, on your wedding day, you will feel confident and know what to expect when it comes to posing and working with your photographer. Plus, by doing an engagements session, I’m not walking into the bridal suite on the day of wondering who the heck my couple is!
